Keyboard and mouse using Synergy to share

A KVM switch is thus a device with which you can use multiple computers with a mouse, keyboard and a screen. Usually switched to a box (KVM switch) between the various computers and switches on the box to the appropriate machine, whose image appears on each of the (single) monitor and then be operated via mouse / keyboard.

Left you see a picture of my home office: I work when I'm not in the office. The monitor is one of my home computer, Dell Latitude D820 Keyboard and mouse as well. The company laptop next to it hangs in the home wireless and connects via VPN to the corporate network (e-mail access, file storage, intranet, etc.).

Both PCs are relatively independent, apart from the fact that they hang in the same local network and share data via Samba and Dropbox shared spaces for exchanging files.
Why I do not just work on the laptop?

Edit large files, Excel or Power Point is simply unnecessary - Well, my PC has more power, RAM, etc. has. In addition, working with Dell Latitude E5500 Keyboard and touchpad tiring in the long run and a second keyboard / mouse I do not want to pack on the crowded desk.
How are you better?

By taking the existing keyboard and mouse and use the laptop!

Advantages: you get confused and can not time left to work right times. And with the method described below works even copy and paste between two computers, this advantage does not offer a KVM switch in hardware.
How does it work?

The answer is the ingenious freeware Synergy, which works as a K (V) M switch in software. The "V" is bracketed because it does not offer V mean is, the image is not transmitted with Synergy, "only" mouse and Dell Studio 1737 Keyboard, so a KM-switch.

The establishment of Synergy is not long, but unfortunately is not very intuitive, so here are some examples of how I set up the software for me.

The setup:

1 PC with mouse, keyboard, monitor - right side of a laptop that will use the mouse and Dell Inspiron Mini 10 Keyboard with the PC. Why am I "right of it," said stress? Because you can set up Synergy so that (in my case!) The mouse at the right edge of the PC monitor that leaves the left edge of the notebook and monitor reappears. Tongue out

The description is based on two Windows XP computers, it is also available for Windows 95/ME/98, Unix / Linux and in a stripped-down version for Mac. Only Windows Vista and Windows 7 are not officially supported, but work well anyway, if you Synergy as "administrator" to start.

First version of the software download of Synergy. I recommend the version with the installer, because the installation is automatic.

After the installation (on both computers) you have the Start menu and on the desktop a new Synergy icon; this double to start the software. We start with the server, so the computer is physically connected to the Dell Latitude D800 Keyboard.

On this computer, we choose the bottom option as shown on the picture to the left (Share this computer's keyboard and mouse (server)) to see.

In principle, we must establish two things:

a) You must tell the software which monitors (screens) and there are

b) how these screens are arranged.

Synergy 2 - Screen Let's start with a set name) that this makes it the first in the lower part of the upper dialogue by clicking on the "Advanced" button. Here you will be prompted to name the monitor (screen), the proposal is usually the computer name, we can then another. Also change the port number and we can not do this.

Synergy 2 - BildschirmanordnungNach confirming we go back and press the button "Configure" and get a dialog box as shown at left. Mine is already filled out, your will probably be empty at this point.

Well here we add the two (PC and laptop) to screen for and click on the little plus icon at the top.

Synergy 2 - add screens

After clicking on the plus said another dialog box appears, as in the left screenshot to see.

This is currently only the top field of meaning in which you enter the hostname of the PC. This is the same name, one has further set up. The second display (the laptop) also has a name (here: HP-nx8220-Mario), we also add the same.

After that, we dedicate ourselves to the task b), in which we enter the position of the screens. So when I left PC, laptop right. Here are the two configurations in the image format:

Synergy 2 - Example Configuration 1 Synergy 2 - Example Configuration 2

After confirming we have already almost there. Now we still need to set up the laptop (client). So here also Synergy start, but there the option "Use another computer's shared Dell Vostro 1500 Keyboard and mouse (client)" entry. In the dialog box gives you the name of the PC (in my case sleepnew). Then check again, whether in the main menu, "Advanced "The laptop name is entered correctly and in conformity with what we have entered in the menu screen on the PC.

Now you can press on both sides, "test" and see if everything works as expected. If errors occur, the log window is a first indication. Normal mode is reached later on the button "Start": The program is minimized and if the connection is successful, the program carries a striking symbol, yellow arrow.

Note:

You may receive a warning message to the Windows Firewall. You may not block Synergy, can not work otherwise the communication. In addition, the virus scanner might complains about keylogging activities but that is part of the software in this case, since she is reading the keystrokes and forwards to the client.
Some tips?

Anyone who wants can run the program automatically. You can transfer text or images by copying & pasting (copy & paste) from one computer to another. The position of the mouse determines which computer keystrokes to arrive. If you want to set the mouse (and thus keyboard) to a computer, then you move the mouse there and then presses the "Scroll Lock" key on the Dell XPS M1530 Keyboard. So that the mouse is trapped until another button to "roles" they are free again.
